About the Course

Club Militar de Golf is an 18-hole, par-72 private course in Sopó, Cundinamarca, about an hour north of Bogotá at 2,558 meters of altitude. Designed by Fernando Gamboa and opened in 1977 at its current Sopó seat, the 6,695-yard layout pairs Kikuyo fairways with 76 bunkers and 9 lakes, and water comes into play on 8 of the 18 holes. The club serves active and retired officers of Colombia's military and police forces, plus civilian members and their guests, with a 6-hole children's course, golf academy, tennis, equitation, and a full social club on site. Flat but strategically demanding, the course hosted the LET Ladies European Tour qualifying tournament in 2014 and 2015.

What golfers love

4 PROS

High-altitude target golf: at 2,558 meters the ball flies farther through thin air, and the flat-but-undulating layout with 9 lakes rewards strategy over power.

Water on nearly every stretch: lakes come into play on 8 of the 18 holes, with 76 bunkers and pine and eucalyptus roughs framing every decision.

A course for all levels: three rated marca distances from 6,695 yards down to 5,305, plus a 6-hole children's course and an academy with PGA pros.

Full social club beyond golf: practice ground, tennis, equitation, gym, sauna, restaurants, and event halls, all about an hour from Bogotá.

Things to know

3 CONS

Access is restricted: the club serves active and retired military and police officers, civilian members, and their guests, so unaffiliated visitors cannot walk on.

Strict weekend tee-sheet: weekend and holiday play runs in two shifts from holes 1 and 10 (6:00 to 8:48 AM and 12:00 to 1:48 PM); groups need at least three players and must arrive five minutes early or lose the turn.

Carts are restricted: the club's rules bar motorized carts except for players over 75 or with a medical authorization, so expect to walk the full layout.

Local Tips

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR ROUND

01

Book through the club's tee-time app

Book through the club's tee-time app for weekends and holidays; groups need at least three players and must arrive five minutes early or lose the turn.

02

Take a caddie

Take a caddie: caddies come in three categories paid in cash plus a snack, and a good one matters on a flat layout where water is the main defense.

03

Club down for altitude

Club down for altitude: at 2,558 meters the ball carries farther, so trust the yardages and leave room short on the water holes.

04

Know the holes that bite

Know the holes that bite: the par-5 3rd (535 yards, stroke index 1) and the par-3 11th (211 yards) are the club's famous hard holes; plan them conservatively.
